Loner Carter was born on November 4, 1929, in Dublin, Georgia, to the late Daniel and Priscilla Baker. She was the youngest of three siblings. Loner was baptized at an early age at Mt. Calvary Church in GA and later became a member of Holy Trinity Missionary Baptist Church in Rochester, remaining a spiritual woman throughout her life. She attended Marygrove School and Providence School in Laurens County, Georgia. During high school, she served as a teacher’s assistant. From an early age, she had a natural love for children and carried that nurturing spirit with her throughout her life. After high school, she married the love of her life, Artis Carter, on October 25, 1947. Loner and Artis were married for 65 years until Artis’ passing. Their union produced two sons, Herbert and Artis Jr., both of whom predeceased their mother. In early 1948, the couple moved to Rochester, New York. Loner was a hardworking woman who held a variety of jobs during her life. Some of her employers included Gerber, Strong Hospital Cafeteria, and Stromberg Carlson, from which she retired in the 1980s. Loner loved gardening and took great pride in maintaining one of the best-kept yards on Wooden Street, often admired for its beauty. She loved receiving flowers and often said she wanted her flowers while she was here to enjoy them. She enjoyed the music of Bobby “Blue” Bland and treasured spending time visiting with her family. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed bringing family together, especially for family fish fries. Loner also loved sweets, and friends and family often stopped by with sweet treats just to brighten her day. Loner’s greatest love was her family, and she was truly the matriarch. She was a loyal friend, confidant, and a listening ear to many. She and Artis always had a house full of children whom they loved and cared for. Known affectionately by many as “Mama,” “Mama Luke,” “Luke,” “Aunt Loner,” and “Mrs. Carter,” she was a beloved presence in the lives of generations of family members, friends, and neighborhood children. She was the favorite aunt to many and a loving mother and grandmother figure to countless others. Furthering her family’s legacy through education was a cornerstone for her. She supported three generations in obtaining college degrees and was devoted to leaving a strong legacy for those who came after her. Loner departed this life on Thursday, April 2, 2026, surrounded by family. She was predeceased by her parents, Daniel and Priscilla Baker; her husband, Artis Carter Sr.; her sons, Herbert (Mildred) Carter and Artis Jr. Carter; and her siblings, Hubert Baker Sr. (Lizzie) and Ora Mae Davis (Willie). She leaves to mourn her grandchildren: Robyn Carter, Precious Carter, Melissa (Lorenzo) Lee, Rick Scott, Tracy (Timothy) Jackson Anderson, Danyell Weaver, Eric Weaver, Katrina Newborn, Danon (Cheryl) Carter, Jonathan Carter, Brian Cuomo (Gloria), and Elisha Abrams; great grandchildren: Rainie, Zoe, Laila, Paige, Brooke, Amir, Darius, Elijah, Janae, Jonathan Jr., Naaliyah, Lyric, Anthony, Antwane, Jaquez, Taylor, Tahlise, Promise, Patricia, Patrice, Ashley, Cierra, Jorden, Diamond, Tylasia, Eric Jr., Anastasia, Naven, Brian Jr., Breon, Joshelyn, Antoinette, and Phillip; 14 great great grandchildren; cherished daughters in law Ida Page and Norma Jean Carter; special nieces Bridgette (Van) White, Ava White, and Colleen Brumfield; special nephews Hubert Baker III and Tray Moore; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
