Obituary for Rickey Sherman

Mr. Rickey Sherman was born March 2, 1967 in Goldboro, North Carolina to Gilbert and Ruth Sherman. The family moved to Rochester, New York in 1969, when Rickey was a mere two years old.

Rickey received his education in the Rochester City School District, attending Wilson Magnet and John Marshall High School. Growing up wasn’t easy for Rickey. Although he was incarcerated for a period of time, he did not let that stop him from finishing his education. He earned his G.E.D. while incarcerated. He did not stop there. He learned the trade of landscaping, and proved to be very talented in that area. He worked for years at the Dinosaur Bar-BQue Pit in downtown Rochester. Rickey loved life, and he loved his family. He was especially fond of the family cook outs and playing a friendly game of spades.

Predeceased by his father, Gilbert Sherman; brother, David Sherman; sister, Sarah Sherman and niece, Monica Sherman, whom he loved dearly, Rickey departed this life Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at 5:40 a.m. after a courageous battle with stage 4 cancer. Rickey leaves to mourn his passing: his mother, Ruth Hudson;
brothers: James and Warren (Tierra) Sherman; sisters: Vivian (Freddie), Joyce (Russell) and Deloris Sherman. Rickey also leaves his former wife, Zina Greene, whom he loved very much; five
stepchildren and his step-granddaughter, Laila Lott. Most of all, he leaves his cousin, Big Rick, Richard Long Jr., who knew him better than anyone, along with a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, other
relatives, and friends who loved him dearly. Yes, Rickey lived his life to the end, being surrounded by love.
